¹ What do you think of when you hear the words "underground railroad"? Perhaps a train that runs deep under the ground? Actually, it was nothing like that. There were no engines or passenger cars, conductors or train stations like you would find with a real train. Instead, it was a loose system of people helping other people.

² You might wonder how this organization got its name. It was first described as a railroad in some printed material in the early 1840s. Passengers were runaway slaves. The shelters where they rested were the stations, and those who led them were conductors. It was not a highly organized system. Sometimes it was simply a stranger taking pity on another stranger, giving food, shelter, or a ride for a short time.

³ Many of those who played major parts in the Underground Railroad were free blacks living in both the North and South. Sometimes escaping slaves received help from slaves on another plantation. The majority of help was not available until they reached a "free" state. On reaching the larger northern cities, the railroad became much more highly organized.

⁴ Abolitionists of every race were the main sympathizers of the Underground Railroad. They were committed to ridding the country of slavery any way they could. While they did not help vast numbers of people to escape bondage, the steady trickle of escapees was more than irritating to the slave owners.

⁵ It is estimated that of the approximately one million slaves, only a few thousand escaped every year between 1840 and 1860. Though small in number, the daring escapes were often exaggerated when reported in the various newspapers.

⁶ In the early days of the Underground Railroad, many former slaves were grateful just to reach "free" soil. They were more than ready to start living the free life as soon as possible. For many it was a dream they had cherished their whole life. Harriet Tubman was one of those slaves. It did not take her long to become involved in rescuing as many people as possible. She is credited with leading close to 1,000 people to freedom. The last run was the most dangerous of all. Though the authorities were looking for her, she returned to her former plantation to rescue her parents. She wanted them to know freedom before the end of their lives.

⁷ The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 changed how many people reacted to runaway slaves. Anyone caught helping the runaways could be prosecuted. The runaway slaves themselves were no longer safe just getting to the northern states. Their journeys suddenly became longer and even more dangerous. Now they had to make it across the border to Canada.

⁸ Men like the Reverend Josiah Henson set up colonies in Ontario and Nova Scotia. These colonies were places where black families could live and learn farming skills or a trade. Josiah Henson established Canada's first African American newspaper, the "Voice of the Fugitive." It encouraged other fugitive slaves to settle in Canada.

⁹ More than 3,000 people are estimated to have worked on the Underground Railroad. Some of them were well known names like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Susan B. Anthony.

¹⁰ One of the strongest arguments many of the proslavery people used was that blacks were unable to look after themselves. That was refuted by Austin Steward, a former slave who lived in one of the Canadian slave colonies. He said, "The colored man can not only take care of himself, but is capable of improvement; as industrious and intelligent as themselves, when the yoke of slaver is taken from off their necks."

¹¹ The Underground Railroad was not a great success in rescuing the vast number of slaves held in bondage. It was extremely successful in giving hope to them, that one day they might be able to use it to win freedom, the most precious treasure of all.

Around my neighborhood there are two house. One house is Duncan and the other house is Arla. They both house have many similarities but at the same time have many differences in between.
These two house have many similarities in between. Both house have the same characteristics inside their house they both have the same two bedrooms, kitchen, living room, bath, dining room,and car port. These two house have many differences in between. They both have different location and direction, Duncan house is located across the street and Arla house is situated in front of the street. Although, the house on Arla have no backyard. Nuclear energy must be a consideration for the future with the rapidly depleting supply of fossil fuels. This type of energy can be created through nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. Nuclear fission is the splitting of a heavy atom into two or more parts, releasing huge amounts of energy. The release of energy can be controlled and captured for generating electricity. Nuclear fusion involves bombarding hydrogen atoms together to form helium. In the long run, nuclear fusion has greater potential than fission.

Cost and availability of fuel is a considerable factor when dealing with nuclear power. Fission requires an element that can be easily split in a particle accelerator, such as uranium or plutonium. Fusion, on the other hand, uses isotopes of hydrogen atoms, specifically deuterium and tritium, that can be obtained from ordinary water. Uranium ores occur naturally in many parts of the world but must go through a costly purification process before used as fuel. The unprocessed ore contains approximately 99.3% uranium-238, a non-fissionable isotope of uranium, and only about 0.7% of U-235 required for fission. One hydrogen atom out of 6700 appears as deuterium, a naturally occurring isotope of hydrogen with an extra neutron, and can easily be separated from the rest. Uranium-235 is a non-renewable resource that will eventually run out, much like the fossil fuels. The abundance of deuterium and lithium provide a virtually unlimited supply of fuel for nuclear fusion. Therefore, nuclear fusion seems to be the better choice.

Second, the potential amount of energy produced by fusion can greatly outweigh the fission. Initially, there are some disadvantages to fusion. The time and money required to develop technology needed to initiate, contain, and sustain a profitable fusion reaction is costly, but the development is still in its early stages and will continue to advance through the next century. Fission readily creates a chain reaction which must be slowed through use of a moderator to avoid core meltdown, while fusion can only be accomplished at temperatures similar to the centre of stars, about 100 million degrees celsius. The components used in fusion exist in the form of plasma where atoms are divided into electrons and nuclei. No solid material known to man can withstand temperatures necessary for nuclear fusion, but several methods of containment are being researched, magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. Until recently, all fusion devices developed have used much more energy than produced, but the latest designs have been able to generate an equal amount of energy to that required to sustain the reaction. Finally, fusion of a given mass of deuterium will be able to create over four times the energy produced through fission of an equal mass of uranium. It is just a matter of time and development before useful amounts of electricity can be produced through fusion.

Finally, the biggest concern people have about nuclear power is the production of radioactive waste among other hazards. First, the radioactive waste produced by fission remains highly radioactive for thousands of years. Fusion produces only low levels of short lived radiation, decaying almost completely within 100 years. Secondly, neither fission nor fusion reactors produce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming and acid rain. Finally, a malfunction of the moderator in nuclear fission reactors almost assures a core meltdown. The unchecked reaction heating up very rapidly, eventually liquefying the protective casing, releasing catastrophic radioactive material into the environment. Fusion reactions, however, are so extremely difficult to sustain that if anything were to go wrong, the reaction would invariably stop. After examining the potential of such technologies as fusion it becomes the obvious choice over fission.

In conclusion, nuclear fusion has much more potential for long term use than the current fission reactors, even though in the short term it may cost a little more to develop. The small price to pay for development of fusion technology seems trivial in comparison to the price of the planet.

Nowadays, television has become the most popular media of human kind. It’s also the indispensable device in our daily life. By watching TV , we can see many things happened in the surrounding us world , therefore it help us to catch and avoid being dropped back from the world of information. Everyone must agree that the advantages of watching TV are very considerable .But beside those benefits , there are some disadvantages that we must notice to be sure that we watch TV most effectively.

Beginning from the first one, I must say that television is one of the most important invention in transforming information history . From very long ago, people had already known how to transform information in many different ways but only when the first television programme was broadcasted , a new age had begun , the age of image transformation. Television nowadays has been very popular, and almost every family have the access to it. By sitting ideally at home , watching TV , you can get a whole look all over the world. The appearance of television and television broadcasting enriches our entertainments . Many events and competition can be watched “live” and many exclusive movies are presented as well (although it’s a bit late in comparison with seeing those movies in the cinema) , but all are legal and you’re free to enjoy them. In addition, if you want to travel but do not have enough money, I suggest you can enjoy traveling in the TV (for example watching the discovery channel or national geography channel) , they’re screened 24/24.

With that time , you can learn several language as well as finish some studying course. On the other hand , television programme are not always suitable for all ages.Sometimes , there are some movies contain sexual material and violence which affected the stormy phase of growing of children and teenagers and should not be watched ,even by some adults. Some people think that listening to our ipods or mp3 players does not cause problems in our ears, in fact this is not true because we listen to our ipod or mp3 players when we are in the bus or on the train and we don’t think about how dangerous this can be if we listen to music all the time loudly. According to professor Fan-Gann Zenthis can damage our ears, this theory shows that if people keep listening their mp3 players loudly, in 10 years they are going to reduce their sense of hearing. Another professor, Bob Cowan from the Hearing Cooperative Research Centre, says that there are three main risk factors. "That they listen to their devices at loud or very loud levels; that they listen to their devices for more than a couple of hours per day and that they listen to their devices five to seven days per week"

Anyway the people in the street who have ipods or mp3 players are listening to them and they don't think in the risks, "they say listening to their ipods does not hurt, they say this is the best what the companies can made because when we are in the train or in the airports while we are waiting for something or somebody we can be listening to them, and really i don't think this can be dangerous is just listening to my ipod" he said.
